There is little reason to listen to commercial FM radio anymore, it is an old medium that provides little choice of music and is saturated with ads. For the last couple of years there has been an alternative, streaming internet radio. An alternative that has been somewhat complicated to use.

Screamer Radio attempts to remedy this problem by bringing most of the required steps into a single, easy to use, freeware program. Not every preset station will be a success, we found that many URLs lead to a Web site, not to a stream. If that’s the case, you can follow the link from Screamer Radio, do a little searching around the site, and manually enter the URL. Unfortunately, there’s no way to edit the global library for everyone’s benefit.

You won’t find absolute perfection in this free desktop app for streaming Internet Radio, but you will find a mess of language options, preset stations, and a few extra functions stuffed into a very light, fast app.

Screamer Radio Features :

It’s easy to use

It’s ad free

It has no spyware

It has a huge database of radio stations

It has a cool peak meter

You can easily record what you’re listening to

You can hide it in the system tray

You can play back on multiple soundcards

Free

Supported Stream Types :

Shoutcast and Icecast MP3 Streaming

Icecast OGG Vorbis Streaming

WMA Streaming

AAC Streaming

As for the perks, you’re looking at two sound effects, saving favorite stations (but not songs,) and audio recording you’ll be able to easily open the Recordings folder from the app interface. With Screamer Radio, you’ll also be able to mute audio and do some manual configuring. It’s a great deal for those looking for ease of use and an easy way to experiment with new stations and sounds in a set-it-and-forget-it format. If you’re looking for more advanced features like visualizers, saving individual songs, and socializing, however, this isn’t the radio app for you.

RealPlayer was a real presence to the web, and one of the few players who lasted this long. So they must do something right, because even if the web evolved so much this product managed to keep up and be one of the top mediaplayers to date. In such times, it’s great to have a quick and simple tool for downloading, editing, sharing, and transferring media. RealPlayer for Windows already had most of that down, offering a sweeping array of features, from one-click video downloading to automatic transcoding to social network sharing.

The latest offering focuses mainly on improved device integration and an even smoother user experience. RealPlayer has been around since 1995, becoming the preferred embedded app for streaming audio and video as sites started to offer that functionality, and eventually morphing into the easy-to-use, fully functioning beast we have today. No extra config necessary. RealPlayer’s web portal offers interesting news and links to music and clips so you will soon find yourself browsing through web content and spending time there without even knowing.

Evolved from a basic web player to a complete media experience aggregator, not only supporting video and audio files, but also browsing through pictures, CD/DVD playback, rip and burn, downloading media from the internet and transferring whatever you need to your mobile device. Developers have worked especially hard in this latest version to add the support for most popular devices, so you can easily convert and transfer media files to whatever mobile device you may have. From PlayStation 3, PSP, iPhone or Android devices, sending movies or music to the device of your choice is just one click away.

The latest version of the software adds even more devices to the ever-expanding list of compatible handsets. Plus, RealPlayer now shows USB-connected smartphones and cameras inside the library in the main app window, allowing users to quickly and easily transfer content to the devices via drag-and-drop. Perhaps more compelling, though, is a new back-end feature that simplifies the process of getting photos and videos off of those devices and organized on your PC. In our testing, content was slow to load, but it’s a welcome feature nonetheless.

Best of all, you can do all this for free. RealPlayer only requires a license fee if you want to upgrade to the Plus version in order to access additional features, such as H.264 conversion and DVD burning. RealPlayer is one of the most recognized media players on the market and if you are considering something to “play” stuff with, you should give it a shot.

Comes with a multilingual user interface, fre:ac is a free audio converter and CD ripper integrating various formats and encoders. It supports MP3, MP4/M4A, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC and Bonk files. With fre:ac you easily rip your audio CDs to MP3 or WMA files for use with your hardware player or convert files that do not play with other audio software. You can even convert whole music libraries retaining the folder and filename structure.

The integrated CD ripper supports the CDDB/freedb online CD database. It will automatically query song information and write it to ID3v2 or other title information tags. New translations can be added easily using the ‘smooth Translator’ utility that is included in the distribution.

fre:ac (formerly BonkEnc) features :

* Converter for MP3, MP4/M4A, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, WAV and Bonk formats

fre:ac converts freely between all supported formats. No matter if you need WMA to MP3, MP3 to WAV, M4A to MP3, WAV to MP3 or any other conversion, fre:ac supports any combination of formats.

* Integrated CD ripper with CDDB/freedb title database support

The integrated CD ripper will convert your audio CDs to files on your hard disk. It supports all of the formats available for regular audio file conversion. fre:ac can query the CDDB/freedb online CD database to find artist and title information prior to ripping. No need to enter track names manually.

* Portable application, install on a USB stick and take it with you

fre:ac can be installed on a USB stick or external drive so you can take it with you and use it on any computer. It will also store its configuration files on the portable drive. That way it will always start up with your custom settings.

* Multi-core optimized encoders to speed up conversions on modern PCs

The MP3, MP4/M4A, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC and Bonk encoders integrated with fre:ac make use of modern multi-core CPUs, so ripping and converting speeds get a real boost. You will save time and get the job done quickly.

* Full Unicode support for tags and file names

fre:ac provides full support for the Unicode character set. That way it can handle not only Latin scripts, but also Japanese, Cyrillic, Arabic or Indian. If you like music from all over the world, you can tag your files correctly.

* Easy to learn and use, still offers expert options when you need them

fre:ac’s user interface is designed to be intuitive so you will be able to use the basic features without any trouble. It still offers advanced options when you need them so you will be able to go beyond simple ripping and format conversion using fre:ac.

* Multilingual user interface available in 37 languages

fre:ac comes with a multilingual user interface and is currently available in 37 languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Spanish (Latin American), Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Vietnamese, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Estonian, Lithuanian, Greek, Turkish, Hungarian, Romanian, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Hebrew, Arabic, Esperanto, Galician, Catalan and Valencian). It can be translated to other languages easily using the ‘smooth Translator’ utility that is included in the distribution.

* Completely free and open source without a catch

This release fixes a crash when decoding MP3 files as well as some other bugs. Besides that it also includes an update Ogg Vorbis encoder and translation updates.

Mp3tag is a powerful and yet easy to use tool to edit metadata of common audio formats where it supports ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments and APE Tags. This batch MP3 tag editor is, in the words of a user, “simply indispensable.” If you’re looking for a freeware ID3 tag editor with an auto-tagging feature sourced from FreeDB, Amazon, or discogs, you could do much, much worse than Mp3tag.

It can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words in tags and filenames, import/export tag information, create playlists and more. Besides checking and correcting song tags en masse, the lightweight application sports batch and single edits to effect such changes as case changing, auto-numbering, tag and track name flipping, and user-defined actions. There’s playlist support and configuration exporting in six formats including CSV, HTML, and RTF. Support for more than two dozen languages offer the program up for international use, and a Favorite directory makes it easy to return to your music assuming you keep all your tracks in the same root folder.

MP3tag 2.48 features :

Write ID3v1.1-, ID3v2-, APEv2-Tags and Vorbis Comments to multiple files at once

Full Unicode support

Support for embedded cover art

Automatically create playlists

Recursive subfolders support

Remove parts or the entire tag of multiple files

Rename files based on the tag information

Import tags from filenames

Format tags and filenames

Replace characters or words from tags and filenames

Regular Expressions

Export tag information to user-defined formats (like html, rtf, csv, xml)

Import tag information from online databases like freedb or Amazon (also by text-search)

Import tag information from local freedb databases

Support for ID3v2.3 (ISO-8859-1 and UTF-16) and ID3v2.4 with UTF-8, and much more …

The program supports online freedb database lookups for selected files, allowing you to automatically gather proper tag information for select files or CDs.

The interface is a bit too simple, though. It won’t be hard for anybody to navigate once you get used to the busy Toolbar and using mouse-over labels to identify button functions, but it certainly could be clarified with bigger buttons, or at least more easily identifiable icons. At worst, the user interface will slow you down, but in no way should it stop you from using this top-flight MP3 tag tweaker.

MediaMonkey is an easy to use organizer for serious music addict. It catalogs your CDs, MP3, WMA, and OGG audio tracks, and looks up and intelligently tags and renames/reorganizes them. Stir that up with integrated CD and DVD burning, a stellar interface, a full-featured encoder, and the ability to sync with portable audio devices such as the iPod, and you have a pretty compelling product.

Upon first launch, the program scans your drive for supported digital media files to add to the library. Files are sorted based on their ID3 tags, and the helpful Auto-Rename and Auto-Tag From Filename features keep untagged tracks from falling through the cracks. Party mode locks down your library while still allowing people to request songs. Auto DJ plays selections from your library even when there are no requests in the queue, and the all-important iPod and portable device synchronization works well. Third-party plug-ins are available from the site if you want to tinker with the playback and encoding engine or add additional sound-processing effects. The interface is well designed, with clean, colorful icons throughout.

MediaMonkey features :

Organize music and edit tags in your audio library with a powerful, intuitive interface.

Automatically lookup and tag Album Art and other metadata.

Manage 50,000+ files in your music collection without bogging down.

Manage all genres of audio: Rock, Classical, Audiobooks, Comedy, Podcasts, etc.

Play MP3s and other audio formats, and never again worry about varying volume.

Record CDs and convert MP3s, M4A, OGG, FLAC and WMA files etc. into other formats.

Create playlists and let Auto-DJ & Party Mode take care of your party.

Sync iPhones, iPods, & MP3 players, converting & leveling tracks on-the-fly.

And much more

The freeware version of MediaMonkey can be upgraded to the GOLD version which allows you to access to a variety of cool features. Considering the overall polish of this application, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything you don’t like. Although it’s definitely geared toward managing extensive collections, just about anyone will appreciate the comprehensive feature set.

None of us get much downtime these days, and when we do find time to catch a movie, the last thing we want is waste it on a dud. So movie database software Coollector Movie Database is a real find for the serious movie collector, and also for those of us drowning in an out of control dvd collection. Movie lovers usually end up with big video collections, not to mention big trivia collections.

Coollector Movie Database can help you manage both your collection and your obsession. Its Movie Encyclopedia is an ever-growing database of tens of thousands of films and hundreds of TV shows, including credits. There’s also a personal Owned Videos database, as well as an Existing Videos feature that automatically scans various merchants and displays video titles in print in various formats; it even computes and displays the best price for each.

Coollector Movie Database is much fun to use, because you don’t start with some dull empty database. Now, all that remains for you to do, is to personalize that data, by rating the movies and persons, marking the videos you own, those you loaned, etc… Coollector is a great tool, a piece of software like no other and child-play to use.

Some Key Features :

ENCYCLOPEDIA collection manager:

Personalized encyclopedia.

At a glance, you see what you already know, like, dislike, what you own, loaned, etc…

It’s an unprecedented perspective on your cinematographical culture and tastes.

Helps you visualize who are your favorite directors, actors, etc…

Easier to locate must-see movies.

COLLECTION MANAGER shopping tool:

If there’s a video you’d like to purchase, it is only one click away.

When you enter a video in your collection, it can be as simple as ripping all the technical details from the corresponding video in store.

During catalog updates, you get special notice when a video release involves a person that you had put under “video surveillance”.

SHOPPING TOOL collection manager:

It becomes impossible to inadvertantly buy a DVD you already own, or from a director that you don’t like.

Some online stores offer a wishlist service. Now, your have 1 wishlist for all the stores.

SHOPPING TOOL encyclopedia:

Browsing store catalogs within Coollector is much more conveniant than browsing them online.

It’s faster, and you can perform more powerful searches.

Coollector is organized in a (more natural) movie-centric way: if there are 2 DVD and 1 VHS of a movie, Coollector shows 1 movie available in 3 medias.

With Coollector, packs of movies are well broken into single movies.

The novice-friendly wizard-style interface makes keeping track of your movie titles a snip, from building wish lists and rating movies and actors to even managing who’s borrowed your DVDs. And when it comes to finding movies right for you, we really loved neat touches like the ‘fame meter’ and the intelligent use of color-coding.

While its film database offers a lot of easily accessible information, Coollector Movie Database probably won’t supplant the Internet Movie Database as the database of record for the motion picture arts, but it doesn’t try to be comprehensive, just useful, especially to collectors. That’s a part it plays well.

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities. In 2007, a Qt user interface has been added to Avidemux, which misled people into thinking the Qt version replaced the GTK+ one. This is not true, it has never been officially announced. Both versions are still officially a part of Avidemux. The Qt version has become the preferred one for the Microsoft Windows builds, while for Linux or BSD, there is no official preference – GNOME or Xfce users may prefer the GTK+ version, KDE 4 users may prefer the Qt GUI.

Avidemux does not use any external video decoders. That`s why installing any video codec (for example DivX or Xvid) in the hopes of using it for decoding in Avidemux is a wasted effort (however, Avidemux can use Xvid for encoding). Official Avidemux packages for Microsoft Windows include all external encoders (like Xvid) and decoders and other libraries, so there are no dependencies for them. In particular, as a cross-platform application, it cannot use any DirectShow or VfW decoders or encoders, which are specific to Microsoft Windows.

Avidemux does not use external FFmpeg. A built-in libavcodec library from FFmpeg (i.e. Avidemux contains its own copy of libavcodec, external FFmpeg is not used) is used for decoding and encoding of many formats.

Open-source on the GNU license, Avidemux is a breath of fresh air. Cropping a video is as simple as selecting the section you want to remove and then hitting the Delete key. Re-encoding a video is equally painless: select the output format from the drop-down list, save the file, and you’re good to go. When choosing where to start and stop a crop, there’s both incremental and multisecond advance and rewind tools, There’s also a not insubstantial list of video and audio codecs that files can be converted to. Video formats include multiple codecs for FLV, MPEG, AVI, VCD, H.263/4, and others, while audio formats include MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, WAV, and one or two more.

However, the common practice in digital video is using these two terms interchangeably, which is caused by years of industry obfuscations, greedy proprietarism (pretending that their codec is a format is a common business model for codec vendors and a significant source of their income, as it ties the customers to their products), intentional lying in various magazines, websites etc. (in order to make it ‘easy’ for the readers who could be “confused” by correct terms) and nonsensical use of codec FourCC in AVI (that is, codecs have their own FourCC in AVI files, so if the codec uses a common standard format, users are supposed to install multiple decoders for the same format). Historically, when a company released their own proprietary codec, it was automatically supposed to be the only existing codec for that proprietary format.

The program also includes advanced options, including generic decoder and post-processing tools, user-defined filters, GlyphSet adjustments, and more features. Avidemux should appeal to users of all abilities who are looking for a quick way to edit down video files.

Nexus Radio is some cool online radio player and more. Besides the well developed GUI and features, it has an exhausting list of over 6000 online stations you can listen to. This lovely piece of software not only gives you the possibility to listen to whatever kind of music you want to, but it allows you to save your favorite tracks by recording them in MP3 format. In addition, the app plays fetch–create a filter and it will capture songs or artists according to your keyword choice. That spells “free music discovery” to us.

When you get bored of listening to streamed radio, Nexus Radio also lets you search for individual artists and songs, playing the result immediately or saving it for later. You can mark songs and artists as favorites, for easy access later, tag them, and even directly record audio to your computer. If all that that wasn’t enough, the program comes with some cool visualizations, as well as integration with Facebook and Nexus Radio’s own social network.

Features :

No monthly fees.

No spyware, malware, or adware.

Over 15 million songs.

10,000+ radio stations.

38 music genres.

Full featured Media Player.

Straightforward Audio Editor.

One click recording.

Easy to use TiVo style recording.

Recording filters.

iPod & iPhone compatible.

File support: AAC, MP4, MP3, MP2, MP1, OGG, WAV & WMA.

Dynamic stream recorder with auto file naming features.

Automatic ID3 v1/v2 tag support.

ID3 v1/v2 tag editor.

32 Bit Digital effects.

5.1 Surround Sound.

Nexus Radio has an attractive interface that offers plenty of functionality without being overly complex. The main screen has built-in volume control, menu options, and a dropdown for on-the-fly burning. Stations are listed alphabetically, but other than the name, there’s really no additional information, so you’ll have to hunt and peck to find the stations you like. It’s best to add stations as favorites for easier access with further use. The app isn’t the most polished we’ve seen, but it offers a simple way to save songs and create playlists of tracks heard on Internet radio.

RadioSure allows users to tune into radio stations from around the globe and even record their favorite programs. With a simple interface and excellent performance, this was a surprising and fun download. RadioSure is a neat radio app that will open up a world of new music. This great little tool is now in its 2nd version, and it just keeps getting better!

RadioSure 2.1.969 that allows users to listen to more than 12 000 radio stations that broadcast their content over the Internet with streaming technology. Although there are already thousands and programs that meet the same function, Radio Sure adds some interesting features that make it the perfect program for those who like to listen to Internet radio.

The program does not offer a Help file, but we found it intuitive enough that any level of user should be able to get the hang of the radio. Radio stations were categorized by style of programming, call numbers, city, and language. Once one was selected, the connection was fast and clear and there were no gaps or skips in coverage. We were very happy with the ease of searching for stations and the sound quality produced.

While the thousands of stations amazed us, we were blown away by the program’s special features. Most stations provided information on the artists and songs, which was helpful. In addition, users can bookmark their favorite stations and even hit a simple record button to digitally tape their favorite stations. With an incredible selection, excellent sound quality, and impressive special features, we highly recommend users download this free program as an alternative to the radio.
