Comodo Internet Security, Comodo’s award winning free security suite, offers prevention based, Default Deny Protection (DDP) technology to prevent malware in your PC. All the tools in Comodo Internet Security come conveniently bundled in a single interface, where they’re easily managed and configured thanks to a clean tab menu. The program is complete as regards configuration options and customization settings, but at the same time it looks easy enough for the average user.

The latest version sees a major leap forward in security and usability with the addition of cloud based virus scanning and behavior analysis of unrecognized files making Comodo Internet Security unbeatable at detecting zero day attacks. Under default settings, unknown and untrusted files are automatically scanned by our cloud-based virus scanners then, while the file undergoes behavior analysis on our cloud server, it is run in a sandbox on your local machine so that it cannot modify or affect data on your ´real´ system.

This ground breaking method of protecting your PC means that only trusted applications are allowed to run on your computer. Malware and untrusted files get nowhere near anything important AND you get to use your computer without interruption from nagging alerts.

There are some nice details in Comodo Internet Security that I especially liked: the possibility to import and export your settings, the ability to create lists with your trusted and blocked apps to make the program less intrusive and also the community features, which enable you to report suspicious files and browse support forums directly from the program.

I must say Comodo Internet Security has made a very good impression on me. My only complaint, if any, is the time it takes to configure it properly. The first few days you’ll be constantly receiving alerts until the program gets to know every trusted app. But that’s something common in all security apps and besides, Comodo Internet Security makes up for it.

Comodo Internet Security is continually updated and currently almost 3,000,000 applications are in Comodo Safe list, representing virtually one of the largest safe lists within the security industry. Put simply, the good stuff gets in, and the bad stuff gets nowhere near your PC’s insides.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. With Microsoft Security Essentials, you get high-quality protection against viruses and spyware, including Trojans, worms and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials interface adopts a different color scheme than the previous version, going for various shades of gray to replace the vibrant blue and white look. It doesn’t pop as much, but it also looks far less like a Windows XP relic. For those unfamiliar with the design, Microsoft Security Essentials has four tabs across the top. The Home tab contains your security status and scan options, and you can run a Quick Scan, Full Scan, or Custom Scan. A link at the bottom of the pane lets you change the scheduled scan.

Update is where you manually get new virus definition files and program upgrades, History logs only detected threats, and Settings is where you go for advanced tweaking. The program looks simple, but don’t be deceived: there are quite a few advanced options in Settings–just not as many as many competitors offer. Security Essentials uses labels imported from OneCare: green for all good, yellow for warning, and red for an at-risk situation.

Under the clean and uncluttered interface, Security Essentials wraps up antivirus and antispyware engines, rootkit protection, and real-time detection courtesy of Microsoft SpyNet, the unfortunately named cloud-based service that anonymously compares file behavior across computers running various Microsoft operating systems. You can choose between two SpyNet memberships. The basic membership submits to Microsoft the detected software’s origins, your response to it, and whether that action was successful, and the advanced membership submits all that plus the location on your hard drive of the software in question, how it operates, and how it has affected your computer. Both basic and advanced versions warn users that personal data might be “accidentally” sent to Microsoft, although they promise to neither identify nor contact you. New in version 2 is the option to opt out of contributing to SpyNet while still receiving the benefits of crowd-sourced security.

The Settings window allows you to further customize the program by scheduling scans, toggling default actions to take against threats, adjusting real-time protection settings, creating whitelists of excluded files, file types, and processes, and choosing from the aforementioned SpyNet options. There’s also an Advanced option that is still fairly basic: here you can set Security Essentials to scan archives and removable drives, create a system restore point, and expand user rights to allow all users to view the History tab.

And MSE abandons the additional heft of a firewall, performance tuning, and backup and restore options to focus on core security. However, the new version does include a system restore option, to back up your computer before you remove any detected malware. Most of the changes in MSE 2 are under the hood, but it’s still a worthwhile program in terms of features, especially on lower-powered Netbooks.

Security Essentials runs quietly in the background, only alerting you if there’s something you need to do. And it doesn’t use a lot of system resources, so it won’t get in the way of your work or fun.

Some antivirus and antispyware programs flag Autorun Eater as being infected/malware, although the application is perfectly safe and does not pose a threat to your system. This is called a ‘false positive’. The term false positive is used when antivirus software wrongly classifies an innocuous ( inoffensive ) file as a virus. The incorrect detection may be due to heuristics or to an incorrect virus signature in a database. Autorun Eater was born due to the increase of malwares using the ‘autorun.inf’ method to infect users unknowingly be it from flash drives, external hard disks or any other removable storage device.

Autorun Eater will warn you and remove any suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ files(based on user decision/settings) so that the malware is not executed while accessing the infected drive. There are also certain cases whereby the malware has been removed by an antivirus but the ‘autorun.inf’ file remains. This will cause the drive to be inaccessible through the conventional method(double-click). Autorun Eater will also remove it if necessary so that you can access the drive as usual.

Features:

Prevent malware infection through removable storage devices(pendrives, portable hard disk, etc)

Install and forget, Autorun Eater monitors all drives(except A:, B:, and CD/DVD drives) in real time!

Manually scan drives A: and B: if you have access to either one or both(eg. Floppy)

Pause at any time

Deleted suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ file(s) are auto-backup’ed

Events are logged for future reference

Fix 3 common critical registry changes made by malwares

When a device is infected with a malware and an ‘autorun.inf’ file is dropped, the shell menu is normally modified to execute the malware whenever the unsuspecting user accesses the infected drive.

COMODO Internet Security 5.0.159634.1091 RC is an integrated package for complete protection, incorporating Comodo Firewall Pro and Comodo Antivirus. And so became one of the easiest and most useful free comprehensive protection package. Comodo Internet Security was developed to be a free, multi-layered security application that keeps hackers out and personal information in.

Built from the ground upwards with your security in mind, Internet Security offers 360° protection by combining powerful Antivirus protection, an enterprise class packet filtering firewall, and an advanced host intrusion prevention system called Defense+. Although this may frustrate some users who want only one program or the other, the installer does let you opt out of either of the components. Users are also asked to install the Comodo SafeSearch and Ask.com toolbars, so be careful if you tend to install on autopilot. CIS requires a reboot.

Resource management is better than before, with hogging all but eliminated. It provides a smorgasbord of information and options for advanced users, but it’s simple enough for beginners, and runs smoothly and silently in the background. The version 3 interface utilizes a plain white color scheme and replaces old terminology with more intuitive terms such as Summary, Firewall, Defense, and Miscellaneous. In each, there are links to relevant security issues so users can drill down to learn more about how the firewall is performing. The firewall rears its head most often when Security Alerts ask about new Internet connections as the program “learns” your computer’s behavior.

Shield-shaped buttons at the top facilitate switching between the antivirus and firewall modules, as well as a summary tab that provides a general overview. Users can toggle automatic scans of archives or downloads, scans on start-up, manage the quarantine, and schedule scans and definition file updates through a clean and comprehensible list of links. The definition file update crashed during its first use, but was stable thereafter. Scans completed at a reasonable speed, but were not blazingly fast.

Once installed, COMODO Internet Security 5.0 will learn what programs are reliable and which not and will protect your PC warning if they try to access the computer, if you have a virus or if a program tries to edit a registry key without authorization.

COMODO Internet Security 5.0 is always alert in the system tray, but we can perform a manual scan and manually add ports and connections to the firewall and protect files and folders from unauthorized access.

Hitman Pro is a fast all-in-one tool to locate, identify and remove viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits and other types of malware. The executable can be downloaded and run straight from a USB Flash Drive, CD/DVD, local or network attached hard drive and will quickly reveal the presence of any malware. Hitman Pro uses innovative cloud computing techniques to detect and remove potential malware threats with minimal impact on system performance.

Hitman Pro is designed to work alongside existing security programs without any conflicts. It scans the computer quickly (less than 5 minutes) and does not slow down the computer (except for the few minutes it is scanning). Hitman Pro does not need to be installed. A further benefit of this technology is that you need never again download definitions on a hourly / daily basis as this is all managed in the cloud further reducing the impact on your PC. Hitman Pro will work alongside any existing anti-virus/anti-spyware or security suite and can be simply run whenever required to give a second opinion or be called upon to remove threats missed by your existing software.

Scanning your PC is free for the life of the product and in addition removal of malware is also free for the first 30 days, thereafter, users can take a paid for subscription to cover malware removal in the future. The innovative Early Warning Scoring (EWS) technology allows users without internet to remove potential malware.

If persistent spyware is bogging down your computer, you might need HijackThis. The tiny program examines vulnerable or suspect parts of your system, such as browser helper objects and certain types of Registry keys. Pressing the Scan button generates a log of dozens of items, most of which are just customizations. Don’t check off an item and hit the Fix checked button unless you’re sure it’s malware. Clicking Info on selected item tells you why the entry was flagged as suspicious, but not whether it’s actually malware. To find that out, search the Web for that item’s name or go straight to a forum, such as SpywareInfo or Computer Cops. Saving the log creates a text document you can post to these forums.

The latest version adds powerful tools to the Config window. The process manager and hosts file editor help you excise virulent infections. The unique ADS Spy tool scans for alternate data streams, which some browser hijackers use to hide from spyware removers. The program still installs into whatever directory in which you unzip the file, which can make it hard to locate. HijackThis is a serious tool for any user who needs to root out a serious infestation, but wield it with caution.

HijackThis is a great malware removal tool, but it’s not for the average user. The list it generates is full of innocent or harmless entries and items that should be there. Its main intent is to show you what’s what, not make a determination of what’s actually a threat–so utilizing it effectively requires a fair amount of knowledge. You can select items on the list and have the program delete them, so if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can create quite a mess despite the automatic backup function that allows you to restore items you’ve removed. HijackThis’s other features include a handy process viewer and an ignore list that you can place items you’ve deemed as innocent to so they’re not scanned in the future.

Even if you don’t use HijackThis to actually remove threatening items, it’s handy for learning about what they are and can be used for. Simply select an entry on the list and click on the “Info on selected Item…” button for information on what the item is and an example of how it might be used malevolently. Just stay away from the “Fix checked” button until you’re confident that you know what you’re about to zap.

It is available for you to download and use for free of charge. The program provides protection for your PC against attacks by detecting malicious behavior, such as capturing your keystrokes or stealing your data. The new edition of this popular free security program, adds an on demand signature based scanner, a mostly just for fun world map that shows detected threats, and a useful system activity monitor that provides a good deal of information on the programs and services running on your PC.

ThreatFire seeks out rootkits, heuristics based threats, viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, adware, keyloggers, and buffer overflows. The software real time protection didn’t noticeably slow down our computer, and the customizable advanced settings were excellent. Users can pick and choose their preferred trusted processes and create rules for detection, such as scanning for SCR files created by an e mail client. You can also avail yourself of the scheduler, and create a system restore point before moving threats into quarantine. The IntelliScan took about 15 minutes on our machine, but it didn’t lock us into scanning mode. We were still able to check out other panes in the ThreatFire interface.

In independent tests conducted for PC World by AV Test.org, a German security program testing operation, ThreatFire’s performance was outstanding. It correctly identified 18 of 20 new, relatively unknown malware samples by looking purely at factors such as where the program came from, what changes it made to files or the system Registry, and whether the program attempted to send information to the Internet. It successfully blocked 17 of those 18 (one sample stopped ThreatFire before the block could occur), and it successfully cleaned 16 of those blocked (it left part of one infection behind).

The lightweight ThreatFire service and system tray process didn’t noticeably impact our test system while we surfed the Web and performed common tasks, and together they used less than 10MB of system memory. But security programs by nature have to reach far into your PC, and as a result they can often conflict with other software and cause trouble. In our tests on one heavily used PC with a wide range of installed programs and utilities, the computer locked up each time we attempted to run an on demand scan using ThreatFire’s signature scanner. You don’t need to run the signature scanner to get ThreatFire’s worthwhile behavioral protection, but such lockups are a good example of why you should be careful about installing too many security extras. ThreatFire’s thorough behavioral protection provides a worthwhile additional layer of security, particularly for shared or other at risk PCs. It’s all the more impressive for being free. As always, however, be careful about loading your computer down with security programs. ThreatFire is easy to use, instantly effective, and very light on system resources.

Traditional antivirus solutions cannot protect you until after they have discovered a new threat and produced a signature to counter it. ThreatFire does not rely on signatures, but instead provides behavior-based protection. It is designed to be used alongside your existing antivirus software and it fills the gap in protection between your antivirus signature updates. ThreatFire protects you against major security threats including viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits and even some spyware. Its advanced ActiveDefense technology intelligently analyzes the behavior of processes and programs on a system and immediately halts any malicious action. It continuously monitors all activities on your PC at a very low system level and uses a proprietary combination of analytics, risk algorithms, program histories and tolerance thresholds to identify and shut down threats so you are always protected, no matter how new the threat.

Threatfire includes some exclusive features that surpasses traditional antivirus software. Unlike the traditional anti-virus software that first identify the threat before providing protection, Threatfire continuously protects the PC against potential attacks by tracking any malicious behavior, such as capturing keystrokes or stealing your data, instead of only looking for known threats such as normal antivirus software. Threatfire offers advanced real-time behavioral analysis designed to stop never-before-seen zero day threats (that exploit the currently unprotected traditional security products), detected to solely detecting their malicious activity. Threatfire also features and allows users to create restore points before quarantining infections. Users have the options to set the preferred trusted processes and define rules for protection like scanning for SCR files created by e-mails.

ThreatFire was built so you can use it alongside other antivirus software and it fills the gap in protection between your antivirus signature updates. We have noticed that ThreatFire doesn’t slow down your PC, although it continuously monitors all activities and uses a proprietary combination of analytics, risk algorithms, program histories and tolerance thresholds. In conclusion ThreatFire is very easy to use and very light on system resources.
