In addition to the previously mentioned disabled functions, we couldn’t use the Quickview or Add Variable functions, or any of the subfeatures of the disabled tools. Nevertheless, we were able to browse to and add files and quickly change the file time stamp from a drop-down list or enter custom time and date settings as well as change the following file attributes: Archive, ReadOnly, Hidden, System, Temporary, Offline, NotContentIndexed, and Normal. The tool processed a folder full of images in no time.

UnLock IT integrates into Windows Explorer, so you can launch it by selecting a corresponding item from the context menu for any resource. It gives you a one-click access to checking any resource for locks and unlocking it if required.

On the first screen, we browsed to and added files, chose a destination file path and name, and clicked Next. The next screen let us choose an icon for our self-extracting file or to stick with the default. We could also create a 300-character message with a 30-character title for our file. Next we selected the Extraction Folder Path, which is the folder the program uses to store extracted data on our PC: Default, which is relative to the self-extracting file; Temp, the user’s Temp folder; and an option to let the user choose during extraction. DiskCleaner tracked its progress and very quickly displayed a small pop-up detailing how many files had been cleaned and how many more would be removed upon reboot. You can also set it to automatically clean them whenever your system boots up

When you return, you’ll see all of your files (for the drive or directory you decided to scan) displayed in a rainbow of colors. WinDirStat assigns colors to each file type, such as MP3, ZIP, EXE, JPG, and so on. By default, the files that take up the most space are colored blue, the second heftiest are red, and the third largest green. After the first 10 color-labeled file types, the rest appear in gray–but you can change these settings and colors through the Options menu.

Once you’ve identified where your disk space has gone, you can then more easily decide where you can save space. WinDirStat is loaded with features for managing your files, such as the ability to automatically delete files without even bothering with the Recycle Bin. It’s one of those tools that you didn’t know you needed until you started using it, but once installed, it’s hard to imagine life without it.

Once the application returns a list of results, you then have to decide what to do with the dupes. The application offers a few safety measures directly accessible from an Options file menu. Items such as Protect C\Windows and C:\Program files, etc., are selected by default. Such files will still show up in a duplicate list, and you will not see this in action until you go through with confirming the deletion of such a file. We would have preferred that protected files didn’t show up in the search results at all.
